The city of Carlsbad offers plenty in the way of entertainment. Art lovers are sure to enjoy the city's art gallery, as well as the sculpture garden. There are a number of different sports leagues for both youth and adults. The city boasts three libraries, and a senior center that offers year round activities. Water activities also take place year round.
In addition to the beaches, there are lagoons that are excellent fishing spots. Hiking the extensive city trail system is a favorite pastime of many residents. Nature lovers will find 25 different parks to choose from. There are also 5 different 18-hole golf courses. Other popular attractions include Legoland, Sea Life Aquarium, and the Museum of Making Music.
As of 2010, the crime rate in the city of Carlsbad was well below the national average. The average United States crime index is 319.1. The index for Carlsbad was 145.6.
Moderate temperatures are also a highlight of this city. Summertime high temperatures average around 80 degrees, with winter highs averaging around 65 degrees. Rarely does the temperature dip below the mid-forties during the winter months. Do not expect to see any snow, but do expect to experience plenty of sunshine.
Both the median home value and home age are below the state average. As of 2009, the median home or condo value was $612,200. This amount is up quite a bit from the year 2000 during which the value was $308,800. It is also substantially higher than the 2009 California average of $384,200. Detached homes, townhouses, apartments, and mobile homes are the most common housing options.
Public transportation is available in the form of trains, buses, and shuttles. McClellan-Palomar Airport offers commercial flights in and out of Los Angeles International Airport. The much larger San Diego International Airport is located to the south of Carlsbad, approximately 30 miles away.
